Picture it: It was 1986, I was all of 22 years old. I worked at a small "boutique" hotel in Washington DC, next to George Washington University. I was the Night Auditor which is a lonely, sometimes sad shift working by myself Graveyard Shift 11pm to 7am. Very quiet during those hours at that little hotel. But it was a nice, reputable hotel. One night, I met Eddie Money. He just came through the entrance around 2am and stopped at the front desk to ask if there were any messages. I tried to contain the fact that I was freaking out. 😂 Still have his autograph today. Rest In Peace, Mr. Money. Anyway, back to my story. I lived in the suburbs of DC in Virginia. Driving time to work at those very quiet hours, maybe 25-30 minutes. I had an old but still pretty cool looking 1972 Lincoln Mark IV, I believe it was. Gas guzzler, but hey, it was 1986. 😊 I woke around 4pm that winter afternoon as I usually did since I would get home from work usually around 8am. Eat, shower, watch the tube while buring one for Jesus. 😊 This particular afternoon wake up, the weather man was right. It had snowed like crazy while I slept. Problem one: I could not and still cannot and prefer not to drive in the snow. I am a "Snow Pussy" much like Californians are "Rain Pussies" when it comes to driving in the rain. I know. I have lived in So Cal now going on 24 years. (Huge mistake, by the way) Problem number 2: my backup plan that I have used in the past whenever driving to work was not an option; be it weather, mechanical, etc, was to leave a lot earlier than usual and catch the bus down the street to the subway and subway left me 2 blocks from work. The bys was nit an option on this afternoon because of the very heavy snow because they would either be very delayed, and/or completely full when it came to my bus stop that they wouldn't even stop, just honk as they whizzed by with the driving pumping his thumb toward the back as in "another bus is behind me, in it's way." Yeah right, an hour later and full again? Lol😂 So as I've done before and actually often done no matter the weather, was to walk to the subway station and I reckon as The Bird Flies, it was around 8 miles of a walk. BUT it was a challenge, somewhat on this night, because of the snow I had to walk in, almost to my knees in some unwalked or undriven places, plus having to mostly walk very close to the highway forca major portion before I could get to a more civil road where there were barely any carsl and if there were, they weren't driving 50 miles an hour, slipping and sliding everywhere behind snd in front of me. I felt like the Frog in that arcade game Frogger. ( 80s arcade game around same time as my favorite, Ms. Pac-Man. Well, I was actually the high-score champ at this one bar for almost a year before I got knocked off my pedestal. 😂 Anyway.... I did the usual before leaving for work, eat dinner with my mom, wash up. Shirt and tie. Stuff my comfy walk-around-hotel shoes in my backpack, put on my cool Frye Boots Santa 🎅 got me for Christmas, rolled three joints ( normally 2 if I drove. One right after I balanced the day's accounting at work, which I will never do before because one time I got do stoned, that the accounting was off by a mere i cents! And at 7am when the morning shift and manager came, I was still chasing the 8 cents! And for those who don't know, a night auditors biggest and most important job was balancing the books of the hotel every night! You had to balance it 100%, it's called " Z-ing Out" like Zeroing Out in hotel lingo. A night auditor cannot leave his/her shift unless you're Zeed Out, even if you're still there scratching your head at noon! Anyway, I finally found the "problem" related to a phone call a guest made from his room that prior day and when he checked out, he paid the front desk clerk in cash, but shorted the clerk 8 cents and the clerk never counted thr change he was given, just threw it in the till for me to figure out almost 2 hours after my shift ended! 😮 So moral of that story, don't get stoned before you Z-Out 😂 oh, by the way, on a normal ni- drama shift, I would start the Z- out process around 1pm using the Micros computer/register system and be done around 4am. Hadto wait until well after midnight to start. Now back to our regularly scheduled program... In any case, I'm dressed, joints, boots to brave the walk along US Route 1 to the subway. Yes, the same Route 1, before Hitler showed us how to build freeways, is the same Route1 that stretched from Maine to Florida. It was THE only and most direct route along the Eastern or Atlantic Seaboard. In neck of the woods, it was the Drunken Redneck Expressway. Caution is to be had walking, having to hug the edge of the freeway as I walked to avoid deep snow... ok. So.... oops, two more VERY important things to take before my journey; my favorite "thing" my yellow Sony Sports Walkman that nearly cost me $100 bucks back then and hard yo find. I didn't the Regular Walkman. Nope. I deserved to spoil myself, I worked hard! The Sports Walkman had a better sound, it wss more rugged, the closure of the cassette door was a latch system as opposed to just a snap system. Because why? Anybody, anybody? Because it was supposed to be water resistant and you can jog, bike ad yada yada and your Sports Walkman can take it!:😊 Now the biggest decision.....what cassette to take with me on my journey? And only one, because it will take me a while to walk 8 miles in the snow and since I usually burn one for Jesus while I walk, nothing is worse thsn stopping, change cassettes and resume. Because for me ( many I'm sure) listening to great music for your auditory senses while walking, coupled by the visual and the weed, the music cannot stop because the Flow will stop and that's like, pardon the analogy, but like "pulling out" ad never "coming". I think you get it 😂 AND, YES, AND that Beautiful, Wonderful Walkman had Autob-Reverse. That casette will play and play until you stop it or the batteries die. Again, what tape. Something for a snowy, dark night walk, cool visuals (once I got off US 1) and kerp playing until I walk into the hotel. Listening over and over and not getting bored with it. One of my many bootleg Grateful Dead tapes? No, not tonight. Want studio sound, not concert sound. Brian Eno, Another Green Workd? That's actually a good choice for that kind of walk. But I wanted something with some Cohesion or something with a Storybto tell, leaning towards classical music kind of sounds but with lyrics..... hmmm..... Moody Blues, Daze Of Futures Passed. That's it! Awesome choice! Clap, clap clap 👏 Let me tell you, that particular tape had been played by me many, msny times. I either pick it because my mood demands it, or I pick to demand it from my mood. Got it? 😊 Of course everyone, even Santa, likes the songs Nights and Tuesday Afternoon etc, all good. But listening uninterrupted, walking or whatever you're doing thst offers awesome visuals, by the time it gets to this song and while this song plays, you ain't getting out if that Rabbit Hole and please, Dear God, don't let anyone or anything try to pull me out when I'm already Zoned In. Please. Because this album, this tape, these musicians are Bad Ass Motherfuckers! Keep it 💯 and thanks for hanging through my story. ✌ peace!
